What food waste can be recycled?

Food waste recycler machines can handle most food scraps, such as vegetable peels, pits eggshells, stems and other leftovers, but not many can handle bones, tough leaves (like pineapple) processed oils or cheese. However, the FoodCycler’s patented Vortech technology is a game changer! Unlike other machines, it can handle almost any type of food waste except the large beef bones: go ahead and toss in those peels, wings, BBQ ribs, mussel shells, pineapple leaves, yesterday’s uneaten lunch and let our technology do the work.

Why is it important to recycle food waste?

It’s important to recycle food waste because it stops the food waste from entering the landfill, where it will breakdown and creates methane, which is a dangerous greenhouse gas. In 2022, in the US, over 14% of methane levels came from landfills! Methane, when released into the atmosphere, is 20x more harmful than carbon dioxide. This causes the world to warm up, leading to global warming and climate change. By limiting the amount of food waste entering landfills, there is less methane produced which harms the earth and the environment.

Recycling food waste diverts food from going to the landfill and releasing harmful gases; instead, the by-product produced from the food can be mixed with soil and used to boost plants, closing the loop of food waste.

What is recycled food waste used for?

When food waste is recycled you create a nutrient rich by-product which can be added to your backyard compost or used as a soil amendment to enrich your soil and make your plants grow better.

Foodilizer, the by-product from the FoodCycler, is a research-backed soil amendment and compost feedstock. Foodilizer is jam-packed with nutrients that plants need, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK)! These are nutrients that help plants grow stronger with more resilient roots. Foodilizer itself is not a compost but rather can be a feedstock for composting and has been shown to compliment compost initiatives effectively.

Do food waste recyclers produce any odors during operation?

Food waste recyclers vary in their ability to capture odour production and are unit specific. FoodCyclers are equipped with carbon filters, which allows for a odourless processing. The odours from the food waste run throughout the carbon filters, which take and remove the odour from the food waste. Carbon filters are great for catching the nasty odours from food waste as they absorb onto the filters. These carbon filters are even able to remove most of the odour from the smelliest food waste, such as fish or other sea food!

Is it safe to use food waste recyclers in home kitchens?

Food waste recyclers are safe to use in the home kitchen but should be handled with care. Make sure to read the label and follow the instructions provided. Avoid reaching hands into the bucket, as the inner blades are very sharp.
